The Truth of Jena, Louisiana
Is it just me, or should McMillin have just s.t.f.u.?
"The town of Jena has for months been mischaracterized in the media and portrayed as the epicenter of hatred, racism and a place where justice is denied," Jena Mayor Murphy R. McMillin wrote in a statement on town letterhead faxed on Friday to The Associated Press. He said he had previously stayed quiet, hoping that the town's courtesy to people who have visited over the past year would speak for itself. "However, the Mellencamp video is so inflammatory, so defamatory, that a line has been crossed and enough is enough."
...
A brief note from Mellencamp posted Thursday on his Web site says he is telling a story, not reporting. "The song is not written as an indictment of the people of Jena but, rather, as a condemnation of racism," it says.
...
Mellencamp's song opens, "An all-white jury hides the executioner's face; See how we are, me and you?" As he sings, images of Jena, the high school and the tree are followed by video from the 1960s, including civil rights marchers, police beatings, and President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King speaking. Still images include one of a protest sign reading, "God demands segregation," a stylized drawing of people in Ku Klux Klan robes and an older image of a black man in shackles, begging.
"I do not want to diminish the impression that the hanging of the nooses has had on good people," McMillin wrote. "I do recognized that what happened is insulting and hurtful."
But, he said, "To put the incident in Jena in the same league as those who were murdered in the 1960s cheapens their sacrifice and insults their memory."
Anyway, at the end of the article is a link for the Jena, Louisiana website.
I know, right? Jena has a website?!
When you click on the website, be careful, because it almost crashed my browser. Not because the front page is anything to look at. As a matter of fact, it probably looks exactly like the front room to the mayor's office, or when you open the door to the city hall - old beige wallpaper, half-assed attempt to make the area look "homey", that dingy-musty smell, and rust stains on the ceiling tiles. (Okay, so I let my imagination run.) There's an embedded .wav file of a gavel banging (ironic, no?), and you're greeted by four pictures of three people (someone screwed up and put up 2 pics of the same person). You see their names but not what they do. For some reason, they're all wearing red polos. In the middle of the page, is a Javascript-thingy of what looks to be minutes from the last city council meeting. Too bad it hasn't been updated since 2003. If you're like me, you seen all you can see, and you begin to look for something remotely interesting. I clicked on the link to the Mayor's Notes at the bottom of the page.
A train whistle? The hell?
Ginny's Restaurant...J.H.S. Alumni...Maytag Laundry...What's Wrong With Black America....
Whuuuuuuuuuhhh??
Mixed in with links to Favorite Recipes, Ms. Billies Etiquette 101, Piano Lessons, and LaSalle Florist are:
- What's Wrong With Black America?:
- JENA SIX / Al Sharpton (This one made me nauseous)
- And, on a completely different tangent...or is it?...."Australia Boots Muslims":
"This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this.
But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,
'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'."
"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE.
We didn't force you to come here.. You asked to be here.
So accept the country YOU accepted."
Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, Canadian, American and European citizens will find the backbone to start speaking and voting the same truths!!
"The town of Jena has for months been mischaracterized in the media and portrayed as the epicenter of hatred, racism and a place where justice is denied."No, I think we've got it about right.
(Update, 10/07/07: Following Rachel's lead, I've decided to post a link directly to the song since some dork on YouTube thinks it's "inappropriate". The song is gorgeous!)

Pleajhai Mervin, broken wrist
I work in a youth development center for juvenile offenders - kids who have done anything and everything from armed robbery to murder to sexual assault. Even though I work in the office area, I still had to be trained on how to restrain a child should the need arise, and the restraint techniques are designed NOT TO INJURE THE CHILD if used properly.
The guard was an asshole, a racist, and a bully. Bottom line.
Dear Jerk...
If I turn the volume on my iPod and headphones so loud that the people around me have to talk over it, I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR YOUR VOICE!
If you tap me on the shoulder and I look as though I want to smack you with my 5-lb. Physics book, I DON'T WANT TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR YOU!
JUST WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? If I see one more blown kiss come my way, or if I ever hear you call me "BABY", or if you even THINK about touching me again, YOU BETTER HOPE AND PRAY THAT I'M NOT CARRYING ANYTHING SHARP.
OTHERWISE, YOU'RE WALKING HOME WITH ONE LESS TESTICLE.
